A Wiccan Pentacle is the symbol of the pentagram within a circle on a flat disk of a natural material, typically wood (often oak), wax, metal, clay or stone. A simple, yet beautiful, magical tool that may be used as the focus of many Wiccan Spells and Rituals.
Symbolism of the Wiccan Pentacle
The five pointed star of the pentagram has long been a spiritual and magical symbol for many traditions. For Wiccans, the pentacle, the pentagram within a circle, is a symbol of the four elements of water, air, earth and fire, all in unity with spirit. Together these elements signify completeness and the unification of body and spirit.
The Wiccan Pentacle is a valuable magical tool as it provides a grounding and steadying influence on any Wiccan spell or ritual. The pentacle also offers protection, for example, by forming a shield against unwanted influences.
Pentacle on the Wiccan Altar
The Wiccan pentacle is the centerpiece of many Wiccan altars. Traditionally positioned with a point of the pentagram star pointing upwards, the pentacle is a point of focus of many spells and rituals. Some Wiccan gatherings place ritual bread for sharing on the altar pentacle before passing it round the circle along with a shared drink from the Wiccan Chalice.
A Wiccan spell for manifesting desire may involve placing a written record of the Wiccan practitioner’s wishes, sealed with beeswax, and placed onto the altar Pentacle. The pentacle may also be the point of focus for a visualization ritual of the solitary witch. Generally the Wiccan pentacle is a point of focus, grounding, as well as for visualization of manifestation.
Choosing a Wiccan Pentacle
Wiccans with a talent for craft may like to create their own pentacle. Take care to choose a natural material that feels appropriate, and meditate on the exact positioning of the pentagram within the disk before beginning work.
There are also many beautiful pentacles available from Wiccan stores. Spend time finding the right magical tools. If necessary, ask questions on how the pentacle was made. For example, what type of wood was used? How was the pentacle engraved, or otherwise crafted? It is worth spending a little more on magical tools that have been created with loving care rather than settling for the cheapest mass produced product.
